Designations: BHK-21Cell Type: fibroblast Isolation date: March, 1961 Applications:transfection host Virus Susceptibility: Human adenovirus, Human poliovirus, Reovirus, Vesicular stomatitis virus Age: 1 day old newborn HeLa Markers: N The parent line of BHK-21(C-13) was derived from the kidneys of five unsexed, 1-day-old hamsters in March, 1961, by I.A. Macpherson and M.G.P. Stoker. Following 84 days of continuous cultivation, interrupted only by an 8-day preservation by freezing, clone 13 was initiated by single-cell isolation. This line has been used as a host for transformation with expression vectors containing selectable and amplifiable marker DNAs. The World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) uses the cells for routine diagnosis of rabies.

| BHK-21 Cell Avalanche™ Transfection Reagent can also be used on the following cells with high transfection efficiencies. 786-O Cell Caki-1 Cell MDCK Cell BJ Cell Detroit 551 Cell MG-63 Cell WI-38 Cell MRC-5 Cell Recommended protocols for these cells will be provided with the reagent. The protocols usually provide satisfactory transfection efficiency with invisible cytotoxicity. However, optimization may be needed for certain type of cells. Optimizations may include: the amount of DNA and this transfection reagent; cell density; transfection reagent/DNA ratio, or incubation time for the mixture of transfection reagent/DNA etc. For best transfection result, we recommend using the respective cell type/cell line specific Avalanche transfection reagents. Those reagents have been optimized on both recipes and protocols, and have been proved to have the best transfection results for the respective cell lines or primary cells.
